Empowering Women through Aviation

“Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the Earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will long to return…”
Leonardo da Vinci

Bringing the gift of flight to women in the Piedmont Triad, The Diva Flight Experience offers its participants the opportunity to transcend personal boundaries, combat inner fears, and rediscover the Diva within.

The creator of and driving force behind Diva Flight is none other than MayCay Beeler, seasoned FAA Certified Flight Instructor, Airline Transport Pilot, and spirited TV personality.

“I believe that a woman’s place is not just in the home or even in the workplace,” she notes. “I believe that a woman’s place is in the cockpit. Flying is the magic that empowers women with the realization that nothing is impossible.”

Though Amelia Earhart and Anne Morrow Lindbergh are well-known female aviators, the field of aviation remains primarily a man’s world. Only six percent of licensed pilots are women. MayCay strives to use her passion for flying to change the statistics and allow women the opportunity to sit in the pilot’s seat—at the controls.

“Most women take on traditional roles only to lose themselves in the process, and their quest for personal fulfillment is put on hold to nurture the needs of others,” she observes. “It has been my experience that as natural caregivers, women help loved ones achieve their full potential, yet may be too sidetracked to reach their own. They’ve lost touch with their personal power— their innate free spirit. I am determined to change this.”

Under MayCay’s tutelage and individualized direction, women can go up in a 21st century state-of-the-art personal aircraft, the sassy Liberty XL-2, smartly equipped with Full Authority Digital Engine Control, and experience, first hand, the power of piloting the aircraft. According to MayCay, it’s no coincidence that taking control of an aircraft is comparable to taking control of one’s life.

“I’ve seen shy, fearful women who lack self-confidence and self-esteem literally change in an instance by participating in The Diva Flight Experience. I think women discover that if they can learn to fly a plane, they can then accomplish almost anything else in life.”

The Diva Flight Experience is offered exclusively through Triad Aviation Academy at Piedmont Tria d International Airport in Greensboro. No previous flight experience or preparation is required. In addition to operating Diva Flight, MayCay also works with TAA’s AeroCamp, a program designed to give young people, ages 12 through 18, a unique opportunity to explore the vast and exciting world of aviation and aerospace as well.

She asserts that Diva Flight, however, is a journey into one’s self, one’s aircraft, and one’s desire for something more.

“It is a privilege to share the joy of flight with others. My goal is to encourage and empower women of all ages and from all walks of life to go for their dreams— whatever they maybe, to use their own wings to fly high in life.”

The Diva Flight Experience
MayCay flying over Greensboro

MayCay Beeler, the creative force behind The Diva Flight Experience is a familiar face to many in the Piedmont Triad. Not only is she a spirited and vivacious aviatrix and world record breaking pilot, but she is an award-winning television personality, a true crime author, veteran TV host/producer/journalist, spokesperson, and active FAA Certified Flight Instructor with a passion for all things flying. You may even recognize her as the WFMY News 2 Food Lion Kitchen TV Cooking Host.

A native of Washington, D.C., MayCay has always been drawn to adventure. She worked summers during college as a cowgirl in Wyoming while attending Montana State University. She initially learned to fly for a TV assignment and was instantly hooked!

As a licensed professional pilot with 30 years’ experience, she has set world aviation records in the experimental Questair Venture aircraft. She is a member and former chapter chairman of The Kitty Hawks Ninety-Nines, the International Organization of Women Pilots. She has produced numerous TV features on aviation, including her personal accounts of flying with General Chuck Yeager, and Duck Rutan and Jeana Yeager of Voyager fame. Other adventures in television include competing in the Air Race Classic, an all-women’s transcontinental air race, skydiving with the Navy Seals, and interviewing such celebrities as Mel Gibson and Oprah Winfrey.

“Return to Norman’s Cay,” a DVD documentary available on Amazon details her personally piloting two crash survivors back to the Bahamian island that, decades ago, nearly claimed their lives. Her account featured the playground of a legendary drug lord, and was portrayed in the movie Blow by actor Johnny Depp. She co-authored a 2014 book about the island’s former Medellin Cartel drug-smuggling operation: “Buccaneer—The Provocative Odyssey of Jack Reid— Adventurer, Drug Smuggler and Pilot Extraordinaire.”

When she is not flying passengers, instructing future pilots, or flying for law enforcement as Flight Instructor for the Guilford County Sheriff’s Air Support Unit, she enjoys her most important role---that of mom.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate—our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, which frightens us.”
