PRE-GAME Why We Love the Games I had someone ask me the other day, what do I love most about sports? And they were serious. Great question, but there were so many facets to my answer that I had to write them down. Hmm. What do I love most? Let’s start with LSU’s Tiger Stadium, the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team and Pearland running back Dustin Garrison. I love pageantry, the energy of the crowd and the unbridled love of a team. Whether you love Sam Houston State or the Green Bay Packers, get out to a home game and scream at the top of your lungs for your team. It’s liberating. My sports vice is LSU and I’ll travel to Seattle, Washington, to watch them play and smack talk opposing fans for no good reason. I also love a good upset. Of course the ultimate is the U.S. Olympic hockey team that beat Russia in the 1980 games. David versus Goliath, where David wins in dramatic fashion. No matter what the odds, you have to play the games. I love seeing crowds storm the court or tear down the goal-posts after a good shocker. Sprinkle in some determination, like that of Pearland’s Dustin Garrison, and that’s another big component and allure of sports. Garrison has been told he’s too small or too slow to be a Major DI recruit. His team was told they would get smoked by Euless Trinity in the state championship. He had the belief in himself and his team to keep pushing towards his goals. Dream big or don’t dream at all. The 5-foot-8 running back was the MVP of the state championship, bouncing off Trinity defenders like a pinball, and just signed with West Virginia of the Big East. Congrats to all of the college signees this month and keep dreaming, so we can keep watching. On another note, our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Stratford soccer coach Christopher Matthews, who passed away trying to do the right thing. My relative Becky Malatesta also lost her battle with cancer in February.
